Time well-spent is time spent together. Such is the underlying nature of friendship. Genuine friendship is not contractual but covenantal; not transactional merely, but transformational; not overly predetermined but unfolding over time; not self-serving, but other-oriented.
Metaphorically, the sea of friendship-love is shored in by friendship-fear, whose beaches are drenched and caressed by the seasonal drift of the waves; a pattern may be discerned but it is ever-changing and dynamic, constantly reassuring, and sustainably generative.
Consider,
An invitation to generative friendship is modeled upon the experience of covenantal friendship with the Creator. Without such an anchor, creativity will eventually dry up—a once gushing river dwindles into a trickle and eventually cracked ground that is infertile. That is not what we need nor desire. As we seek to build genuine friendships with others, let us not overlook the invitation we have to the Friendship of all friendships. Am I carving time for such friendship today?
