As I drove my daughter to school this morning, I asked Siri to “play some Chopin.” And Siri did. I wondered what my father, if he were alive, would say in response to this technology–I was sharing with my daughter. I told her how we used to have a record player that could stack up to nearly 7 or 10 vinyl records; how each record would drop and the mechanical needle would play each one.
“That’s cool.”
And then I remembered what my mother told me about that record player. Apparently she wanted to buy a piece of land with that money, which in that day was apparently possible. But instead that money was used to buy a record player of all things.
“That’s stupid.”
For some reason that hit me deep. “That’s somewhat harsh.”

It so turned out that many years later, I became a professional musician. I continue to practice and play my guitar nearly every day. I wonder: what “stupid” decisions are we making that affect the dispositions of people we love and care about in our lives without us every knowing or thinking about it?
How do we even know what we must desire?
Wisdom says, “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” (Psalm 37:4).
Keep your eyes focused on the main thing and everything else will follow. Make it a great day!
