All of us have the potential to offer ourselves selflessly in service to others and embody the role of a priest. The concept of priesthood is not limited to religious contexts and transcends cultural and social boundaries. In some cultures, priests are responsible for establishing order and promoting social harmony.
However, the Bible speaks of a priestly class called and appointed by God. These priests were entrusted with important tasks such as officiating ceremonies, interceding in prayer for others, setting examples of holiness, seeking God’s guidance, and teaching the law. Priesthood is not just limited to religious contexts. Anyone can be seen as a self-appointed minister, making important decisions and necessary sacrifices in their daily lives. Artists, for example, can be seen as embodying a kind of priesthood by investing time and effort in their creative endeavors for the betterment of others.
Ultimately, our role as priests is to steward and mediate our relationship with the Creator and with one another and all of creation. It is a gift, a unique calling, and a capacity that requires mindful curation to serve its proper and intended value. We are all called to serve in a higher capacity as priests, as creatives of a higher order. We must guard this Creator-inspired gift of priesthood with all our hearts and offer it as a gift to others so that they too may be inspired to live out their unique calling among the priesthood of those called and commissioned to serve others.
