Disruption isn’t all that problematic; it is discomfort that we avoid.
The pandemic has caused all of us to think again when it comes to responding to disruptions of cultural boundaries, lifestyles, and patterns of work. What’s really at stake?
In many cases our eyes have been opened to a new social consciousness that has learned to prioritize space and time and human worth according to a renewed sense of the sacred and the profane—that which really matters in an ultimate sense. There’s no time or space for anything else. Yes, if there’s one thing that has not changed, it is our personal and collective sense to seek out what ultimately and really matters, what ultimately is beautiful, true, and good; to find comfort in these.
We strive for comfort but fail to find it in the things that we invest our entire lives in trying to achieve. To find comfort is to “find strength,” to be fort-ified in the way of being human. Creativity that anchors us in such fundamental humanity is worth striving for.
As creatives, therefore, we are constantly searching, ourselves, and inviting others into the process of finding lasting strength—comfort that transcends our common human experience as we know it, but yet can be experienced and felt as created beings in the comforting or strengthening hands of the Creator who makes all things beautiful with perfect timing.
