Uday Mark Balasundaram, Ph.D., M.Div., MBA (Executive)
Founder and Executive Director · Estuary Cultures and Order of Bezalel
Uday is the founder and executive director of Estuary Cultures and Order of Bezalel, a department of Artists in Christian Testimony International. He has taught at institutions including Indiana Wesleyan University, Duke Divinity School, the South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies, and Fuller Seminary.
Before entering theological education and ministry leadership, Uday spent more than a decade in Bollywood’s music, film, and advertising industries as a session guitarist, producer, and composer. That experience—together with more than two decades as a pastor, church planter, worship leader, and missional innovator across the United States and India—shapes his practical approach to creative collaboration and transformation.
Uday continues to consult with leaders and mission-driven organizations, for-profit and nonprofits, educational institutions, and faith communities in creativity-inspired strategy and innovation for mission. He helps leaders clarify strategic challenges, mobilize people, develop contextually fitting responses, and cultivate learning cultures capable of faithful adaptation and growth.
Uday’s 5-lens framework for creativity inspiring theology and mission provides a fresh perspective to the study of faith ecosystems and religions of the world. This framework has been applied in several cross-cultural settings, curriculum design, and organizational consultancy. For Uday, as per his approach to the creatio Dei, creativity is theologically prior to Christianity or for that matter any religious of belief system. This is why the arts are fundamental to reimagining what shared participation in creativity the God may look, feel, taste, and sound like. Additionally, this is the reason why artists and creators and innovative leaders need to lean into their unique creator capacities of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craft as pivotal shifts in aligning personal and cultural systems in alignment with the primordial creativity of Christ for all.
Uday’s teaching integrates theology of creativity (creatio Dei), missiology, ecosystems, market innovation, participatory inquiry, design thinking, the arts, and adaptive leadership. He is especially energized by helping creators and innovative leaders mobilize people, discern possibilities, and give faithful form to work that matters.
He is married to Sujatha, a professional artist and graduate of the Duke Initiative for Theology & the Arts (DITA), whose work specializes in integrating theology and tribal art at artresponses.com. They are blessed with two daughters: Nadira, who is studying engineering, and Aradhya, who is in high school.
