Empathy is good. Compassion is better. Good leaders listen deeply to identify with the needs of others. Better leaders listen deeply with a commitment to do justice to the fatherless, those who need the experience of unconditional love; and the oppressed, those who need unconditional mercy.

Think about the experience of injustice. Is it characterized helplessness? Why? Due to the lack of power and resources to influence the outcomes of events. But why? Because of the nature and outcomes of historical and cultural realities. But what’s that got to do with you personally?…

And that’s how we often begin to see ourselves as victims of circumstances, pawns in the hands of others, instruments of power for purposes that we do not align.

But how do we change…my approach to and role in all of this?

That’s the first step, without losing sight of the big picture, we must rethink our unique roles in our localities.
